Checkout what earwax is made of?

It might seem weird that humans produce wax. After all, that's typically considered the domain of bees. But as anyone who's ever used a cotton swab knows, human ears generate a fair amount of the substance.
While earwax is usually detected in the outer ear, it's actually made in the ear canal (between your outer, visible ear and your middle ear). This section of the ear is lined with wax-producingcerumenous glands. Earwax — also known by its technical name, cerumen — is primarily created by those glands. (Sebum, a fatty secretion of the skin, and dead skin cells also contribute to the makeup of earwax.) It's usually made up of about 60 percent keratin (a protein), with the rest a combination of dead skin cells, fatty acids, cholesterols and other compounds [source: Guest et al.].
Earwax has the same basic composition in each person, but the substance itself can differ in color and texture. People who originate from northeastern Asian countries like China and the Koreas are more likely to have dry earwax. Dry earwax can be hard and red to black in color, or it can be flaky and have a pale yellow shade. For most everyone else, earwax tends to be gooey and ranges from a yellowish-orange to reddish-orange hue.
You may be wondering what you can do about this icky wax. The answer is "nothing." Earwax is another one of the human body's many inventive methods of protection. It serves as a sticky trap for debris and bacteria that try to enter the ear. In addition, earwax is self-cleaning. It eventually falls or flakes out of the ear.
So unless there's an excessive buildup of wax in your ear (in which case you should see a doctor), you should leave the substance be. Devices like cotton swabs, while seemingly handy for earwax removal, can actually cause damage to the ear by either pushing earwax deeper into the ear or introducing additional debris, like loose cotton, into the ear canal.

LAUTECH UPDATE: #164 MILLION IS IN THE KITTY OF LAUTECH NOW, SAYS OYO STATE COMMISSIONER FOR EDUCATION.-

#164 MILLION IS IN THE KITTY OF LAUTECH NOW, SAYS OYO STATE COMMISSIONER FOR EDUCATION.

By : Oyedeji Ahmed ( LMP )

This information is contained in a chat yesterday while engaging the oyo state commissioner for education over the non release of subventions and the insistence of audit report before any payment.

He said; Oyo-State Government is giving 25per cent subventions to all Tertiary Institutions in the state. That also include LAUTECH I.e. 82M x 2= 164M.

But when further asked if #82 million will be the amount the oyo state government will be giving the school per month from January to June or the 25% will only cover a part of the total debt owed by the oyo state government.

He responded; 82 million per month pending the report of external auditor.

It should be note that government is hell bent on the proposed forensic audit as a way to solve the issue of funds permanently. But one could wonder why the audit is raising lot of controversy.

As some believe management or unions are those preventing the audit, others were of different opinion. they believe government is only saying that  to buy more time or to blackmail personalities. Hence, no any forensic audit yet to be carried out.

But, why ? This is because the parties involved are not on same page. The government want to carry out forensic audit without the payment of salaries. The management does not have what it takes to summon the unions while owing them salaries. And unions can only summon for congress when there is money on table. So, who's to be blame ?

While there've been call from government to allow audit to take place , the unions have never seize to demand for the offset of salaries while audit is ongoing. This simply implies that forensic audit can take place if only the unions are not on strike. Or is it possible to audit while staff are on strike ? If yes, then government shouldn't hesitate to summon the management to either Agodi in ibadan or Abeere in Osogbo for the exercise.

Anyway, we've been able to confirm from a reliable source that 164 million is given to LAUTECH this week. We hope Osun state too, will emulate oyo state by paying some amount of money out of the debt being owed.

No doubt, the 164 million being paid by the oyo state government is nothing compared to the debt the state is owing and not even up to the monthly subvention that's suppose to be paid for 6 months by each state which goes for 292 million. But we still need to appreciate the effort unlike the Osun state government with huge debt and without any remorse whatsoever than the mindless statement of incapacitation. What a government ? Indeed, Aregbesola must be a clown.

Till next I write, I indulge you to give maximum support to #fundLAUTECH initiative. With your support and active participation, resumption is certain and very near. In fact, it may be a reality before the end of July.

Checkout the electricity-free fridge which could change millions of lives

A lightweight, portable cooler could help keep food fresh for the millions of people who have unreliable electricityor don't have access to electricity at all. Evaptainers' EV-8 uses evaporative cooling to keep the temperature inside it 27 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 20 degrees Celsius) lower than the temperature outside.
The EV-8 could work, not just for people without refrigerators in their homes, but for displaced migrants living in refugee camps, and for victims of natural disasters that have destroyed local infrastructures.
"On average, it doubles or triples the shelf life of the foods," says Quang Truong, who conceived of the idea and cofounded Boston-based Evaptainers with Spencer Taylor.
In Morocco, where Evaptainers has tested several prototypes of the device, tomatoes last a week, as opposed to two or three days. Onions that usually last five days could last 10 days to two weeks. The country is the perfect location for the device, since it works best in hot, dry climates.
"Some of the most vulnerable populations in the world live in those environments," says Taylor.
These locations — including India, African nations north and south of the Congolese jungle belt, the entire continent of Australia, and the states in the American Southwest — have an average relative humidity less than 65 percent. "The drier the air, the greater the rate of evaporation," says Taylor.
When Taylor and Truong crunched the numbers, they estimated they could potentially help 652 million people.

Why It's So Cool

Anyone who's ever stepped out of a pool on a hot, summer day knows the cooling effects of evaporation. The physics are straightforward. Heat excites molecules, causing them to escape the liquid's surface as gas molecules. As they do, they take some of the heat with them, cooling what they've left behind.
Evaporative cooling techniques have been around for centuries. Stone frescoes from Egypt that date to 2500 B.C.E. depict slaves fanning a stoneware jar to cool its contents. Leonardo da Vinci also experimented with evaporative techniques, and so did Benjamin Franklin. But then electricity came along, as did the refrigerator and evaporative cooling seemed to fade into history.
Then, in the late 1990s, a Nigerian man named Mohammed Bah Abba revived the ancient technology of the clay pot-in-pot system. Still in use today, the zeer pot consists of two clay pots, one smaller than the other. The smaller one is placed inside the larger one and the space between them filled with sand. By wetting the porous matrix of sand with water and then placing a cool, wet cloth over the top as a lid, evaporation goes into effect, and any perishables stored inside stay fresh longer.
It was a great innovation but was not widely adopted outside of Nigeria.
"The zeer pots have a life span of about one or two years because they either break or the pores get clogged up," says Truong.
They're also difficult to mass-produce, notes Taylor, and if the user adds too much or too little water to a pot, it doesn't work efficiently.
But the basic concept was sound, and one day it dawned upon Truong that it could be improved. He was taking a class for budding entrepreneurs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was instructed to come up with a good or service that would change the lives of a billion people.
He thought of the times he spent traveling through countries like Vietnam, Haiti, India and Liberia, and how the smell of rotting food frequently dominated his experiences. After doing some research, he found that, according to estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about 45 percent of fruits and vegetables in Africa spoil before they reach the market. Truong thought he could modernize the zeer pot concept into something larger and more lightweight.
That was back in 2012. After refining several prototypes and winning a couple of innovation competitions along the way, Truong and Taylor think they're nearly ready for the market, where they hope to sell the EV-8 for about $30 to $35.

Scientists Create Alternative Plastics Using Just Sugars and CO2

The vast majority of the world's plastic is created using petrochemicals extracted from the ground. ULTRA.F/Getty Images
The vast majority of the world's plastic is created using petrochemicals extracted from the ground. ULTRA.F/GETTY IMAGES
One of the problems with society's addiction to plastic is that the ubiquitous material's major building blocks come from fossil fuels, which are dirty, difficult and expensive to extract from the ground. According to the British Plastics Federation, about 4 percent of global oil production is used to make plastics. That may not seem like a lot, but it amounts to about 3.8 million barrels of oil per day, based on total global production of 95 million barrels.
But scientists from the University of Bath's Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies say there's a better way for us to create polycarbonate. That's the type of plastic we need for everything ranging from eyeglasses and water bottles to the scratch-resistant coatings for phones and DVDs. In the lab, they've been able to synthesize alternative versions of polycarbonates using only sugars and carbon dioxide, at low pressures and room temperature.

And as another bonus, these new polycarbonates would be biodegradable, using enzymes found in soil bacteria.Polycarbonates made from sugars would have a lot of advantages. In addition to not requiring oil as an ingredient, they also wouldn't need BPA, a chemical that may have harmful effects on fetuses and children. It also wouldn't require the use of phosgene, a highly toxic chemical that was used as a poison gas in World War I.

"With an ever-growing population, there is an increasing demand for plastics," said Antoine Buchard, a research fellow in the university's chemistry department, in a press release. This new plastic is a renewable alternative to fossil-fuel based polymers, potentially inexpensive, and, because it is biodegradable, will not contribute to growing ocean and landfill waste. It's also an alternate to already existing bioplastics made using plant material.
One of the most intriguing parts of the research is that the scientists used thymidine, a sugar found in DNA, as a building block for a polycarbonate plastic that can be tweaked to allow human cells to stick to it. That would make it useful as a scaffold for tissue engineering that eventually could produce manufactured human organs for transplantation.

Learn a syndrome today (syndrome of apparent mineralocorticoid excess )

The syndrome of apparent mineralocorticoid excess (AME) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypertension, hypokalemia, low renin, and hypoaldosteronism. It is caused by deficiency of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, which results in a defect of the peripheral metabolism of cortisol to cortisone. As a consequence, the serum cortisol half-life (T½) is prolonged, ACTH is suppressed, and serum cortisol concentration is normal. The hormonal diagnosis of the disorder is made by the increased ratio of urine-free cortisol to cortisone. In patients with AME, this ratio is 5-18, while in normal individuals it is <0.5. These studies suggest that an abnormality in cortisol action or metabolism results in cortisol behaving as a potent mineralocorticoid and causing the syndrome of AME. We report three siblings - two female and one male - with the syndrome of apparent mineralocorticoid excess who presented with hypertension, hypokalemia, low renin, and low aldosterone levels. The finding of abnormally high ratios of 24-h urine-free cortisol to cortisone in our three patients (case 1, 8.4; case 2, 25; and case 3, 7.5) confirmed the diagnosis of apparent mineralocorticoid excess syndrome in these children. They were treated with oral potassium supplements. The addition of spironolactone resulted in a decrease in blood pressure, rise in serum potassium and a gradual increase in plasma renin activity in all three. In this study, the genetic testing of those three siblings with the typical clinical features of AME has detected missense mutation c.662C>T (p.Arg208Cys) in exon 3 of the HSD11B2 gene in the homozygous state.

Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has been lambasted on Twitter as many people castigated him for posting a photo showing him nicely dressed while ‘pretending’ to farm. The politician had allegedly wanted to use the photo to create awareness on farming and its importance but many interpreted it as another gimmick for his presidential ambition. Nigerians tackled him for wearing a white kaftan and alleged Rolex watch to the farm. They called it pretence of the highest order and another way todeceive people.

Responding to the criticism, Atiku wrote:

WAEC GCE certificates collection

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has urged GCE candidates to endeavour to collect their certificates within four years of writing the examination as any delay beyond that will attract custody fee.

Demianus Ojijeogu, the Head of Public Affairs Department, WAEC, Nigeria disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, commonly referred to as WAEC GCE, is usually taken in November/December every year.

Mr. Ojijeogu said: “the normal charge for the certificate is N3,500 and only payable by those whose certificates were issued between zero and four years.

“But from five to nine years is N8, 500; 10 to 14 years N13, 500; 15 to 19 years N18, 500 while 20
years and above will be charged N23, 500.

“These charges are (for) custody fee; for keeping the certificates for so long because it occupies space in our office. It will also serve as a deterrent to others.

“I don’t know the reason why people will sit for exams and their certificates are ready yet they will not come for collection. What was the essence of the certificate in the first place?’’

He also said that requirements for collection of the GCE certificates within Nigeria were an application letter, sworn affidavit from the High Court, online result print- out, one passport-size photograph, photo card and identity card.

Osun Iyalojas Protest Against Aregbesola Over Osuwon Omoluabi

Osuwon Omoluabi, a modern gauge for measuring of stuffs in marketplaces in Osun State which was introduced by the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was rejected today as representatives of all the market women in the state stormed the state Secretariat in a protest.

The market women especially those dealing with grains and measurable products closed their shops and stormed the popular Olaiya Junction around 11:45 am before they headed to the State House of Assembly to register their grievances.

The angry traders frowned at what they described as imposition of Osunwon Omoluabi measurement scales, vowing to resist any attempt by the state government to compel them into using the scales.

It would be recalled that the state Ministry of Commerce, Cooperative and Empowerment’s task force and compliance officials had on Tuesday, thronged the market to enforce the usage of the measurement scale by the market women especially those dealing with grains and measurable products.

Amiloaded gathered that the women were chanting various anti-government songs to express some marketing policies of the Aregbesola led administration especially as per the usage of the modern scale.

They therefore rejected the new scale and told the state government to instead, produce en-masse, the old scale and ensure full compliance with its usage through strong monitoring team which will prosecute non-compliance by any trader who tampers with such scale, weights and measures.

Reasons why you have to completely eat your onion during cooking

*As frequent onion users we need to know this*

*ONIONS:* Please read to the end: important

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers & their family had contracted it & many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only 2 rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill. I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs. sure enough it happened just like that the onion was a mess & I began to feel better.

This is the other note.

Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. *Onions ABSORB BACTERIA* is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting *colds & flu* and is the very reason we should NOT eat an onion that has been sitting for a time after it has *been cut open.*

*Left over onions r poisonous*
When food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate *ONIONS* and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). It's probably the *ONIONS,* and if not the onions, it's the *POTATOES.*

*Onions are a huge magnet* for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!). If you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

*Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to save it to cook with the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night - as it creates toxic bacteria which causes adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.*

8 Unbelievable Things You Never Knew Your Smartphone Could Do

Our smartphones are our ultimate companions. I still wonder if dogs are still man's best friend or smartphones are taking over.

From selfies to causing trouble on Facebook and sometimes being savages on twitter, keeping up with our favorite Celebs and trolling them once in a while grin Our smartphone helps us to all that. Apart from all that, there are a couple of amazing things your smartphone could do that you never knew.

1. Function As A 3D scanner

The Institute for Visual Computing at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) created an app that lets you scan a 3D object by simply moving your smartphone around it. A 3D model of the object appears on the screen and shows you whether you missed anything. It can also determine the absolute size of the scanned object. You can use this app to capture faces for 3D portraits or simply to copy real-world objects for later study or 3D printing.

E.g - 3DSCANN

2. Test for STDs

A dongle or attachment which performs the functions of a lab-based blood test—specifically, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)—to test for HIV antibodies and two types of syphilis antibodies can be plugged in to a smartphone. Researchers have recently tested it in Clinics in Rwanda that work to prevent mother-to-child-transmission and in voluntary counseling and testing centers. It costs just $34 unlike the $18,450 for the original ELISA equipment, this device could aid in early diagnosis and treatment of these illnesses in developing countries.

(not yet available for public use)

3. Give You Instant Eyeglass Prescriptions

Having issues with your eyes? Don't worry, Smart Vision Labs developed the SVOne, a pocket-sized device that can measure the refractive errors in the eye and shows you a digital eyeglass prescription on your smart phone.

The company founders want the app to be used by doctors with multiple offices or limited space and to serve patients who have problems with traditional machinery or have difficulties with mobility. It'll really work out in many developing countries where millions lack eye care. According to the World Health Organization, 90 percent of the world’s visually impaired people live in low-income settings with no eye doctors available and that uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of moderate and severe visual impairment globally.

E.g - EyeXam

4. Track Your Cholesterol Levels

Engineers at Cornell University developed an app - the Smartphone Cholesterol Application for Rapid Diagnostics, or smartCARD, to test cholesterol levels. You clamp the device, similar to a credit card reader, over your phone's camera then place a drop of your blood, sweat or saliva on the strip. Insert the strip into the device, a built-in flash illuminates the strip and an app matches the image's color values and shows results on the phone.

5. Check If You're Mentally Stable grin grin
(actually assess your mental health)

Researchers at Dartmouth University created an Android app that can analyze the smartphone owner’s state of mind. The app automatically measures your sleep duration, number and length of conversations per day, physical activity, locations and time spent there, stress level, eating habits and more—24/7 and without user interaction. It uses Computational method and machine learning algorithms on the phone then assesses the data and make high-level inferences about sleep, sociability, activity, and other behaviors. The app can be used to provide real-time feedback on safety in schools and stress levels and assess the quality of teaching. It can also be used to monitor mental health, trigger intervention, and improve productivity in the workplace as well.

E.g - Mental Health Test App,

6. Help You Stay Away From Alcohol

Hey!! Don't touch that bottle of stout.. wink

The Addiction-Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System smartphone app has designed for people with alcohol problems and sounds an alert if you stray near a high-risk location, such as a bar they previously frequented. People who used the app reported drinking less. People using the app also were more likely to consistently abstain from alcohol.

e.g - Sobriety,

7. Show You Where Gunshots Originated

Vanderbilt University's group of Researchers turned an Android smartphone into a simple shooter location system. The smartphone app uses external sensors, with the size of a pack of cards, containing microphones and a processor that detects the gunshot’s acoustic signature and exact time. The processor sends that information to the smartphone, and transmits it to other modules and uses triangulation to pinpoint the origin of the gunshot. It would work out well for the Nigerian Police.

8. Improve Your Hearing Aid

A smartphone app could help improve the quality of life of people who use hearing aids. Most hearing aids in order to remain small and low-cost typically use small processors. Smartphones, on the other hand, have powerful processors, large memories, microphones, speakers, wireless technology and long-lasting batteries, which can improve the performance of hearing assistive devices. For example, a smartphone could run sophisticated algorithms to distinguish background noise signals and enhance speech.

E.g - TextHear, Earshots

The apps added to the posts are just examples not the exact app. The functionalities are almost the same but not exact. Most of the apps are still being tested. You can look them up on YouTube if you need more details and possibly a link

Checkout some things which you should remove from your Curriculum Vitae.

Hiring managers rarely have the time or resources to look at each résumé closely, and they typically spend about six seconds on their initial fit/no fit decision. If you want to pass that test, you need to have some solid qualifications — and the perfect resume to highlight them.
Here are 34 things you should strike from your resume right now.

1. An objective
If you applied, it's already obvious you want the job.
If you're in a unique situation, such as changing industries completely, it may be useful to include a brief summary.

2. Irrelevant work experiences
Yes, you might have been the "king of making milkshakes" at the restaurant you worked for in high school. But unless you are planning on redeeming that title, it is time to get rid of all that clutter.career expert and founder of career-consulting firm Resume Strategists points out: Past work experience that might not appear to be directly relevant to the job at hand might show another dimension, depth, ability, or skill that actually is relevant or applicable.
Only include this experience if it really showcases additional skills that can translate to the position you're applying for.

3. Personal details
Don't include your marital status, religious preference, or Social Security number.
This might have been the standard in the past, but all this information could lead to discrimination, which is illegal, so there's no need to include it.

4. Your full mailing address
A full street address is the first thing Amanda Augustine, a career-advice expert for TopResume , looks for to immediately cut from a résumé.
"Nobody needs to have that on their résumé anymore, and, to be quite honest, it's a security concern," she tells Business Insider .

5. More than one phone number
Augustine suggests including only one phone number on your résumé, and that number should really be your cellphone, so that you can control who answers your incoming phone calls, when, and what the voice mail sounds like.

6. Your hobbies
In many cases, nobody cares. If it's not relevant to the job you're applying for, it's a waste of space and a waste of the company's time.
"Also, you don't want employers trying to contact you in five different places, because then you have to keep track of that," she says.

7. Blatant lies
A CareerBuilder survey asked 2,000 hiring managers for memorable resume mistakes, and blatant lies were a popular choice. One candidate claimed to be the former CEO of the company to which he was applying, another claimed to be a Nobel Prize winner, and one more claimed he attended a college that didn't exist.
Rosemary Haefner, chief human-resources officer at CareerBuilder, says these lies may be "misguided attempts to compensate for lacking 10o% of the qualifications specified in the job posting."
But Haefner says candidates should concentrate on the skills they can offer, rather than the skills they can't offer.
"Hiring managers are more forgiving than job seekers may think," Haefner explains. "About 42% of employers surveyed said they would consider a candidate who met only three out of five key qualifications for a specific role."

8. Too much text
When you use a 0.5-inch margin and eight-point font in an effort to get everything to fit on one page, this is an "epic fail," says J.T. O'Donnell, a career and workplace expert, founder of career-advice site Careerealism.com , and author of "Careerealism: The Smart Approach to a Satisfying Career."
She recommends lots of white space and no more than a 0.8 margin.
Augustine agrees , warning particularly against dense blocks of text.
"Let's be honest: You're looking this over quickly, you're glancing through it, your eyes glaze over when you get to a big, long paragraph," she says.

9. Too many bullets
In the same vein, you can also overload your résumé with too many bullet points, which Augustine calls "death by bullets."
"If absolutely everything is bulleted, it has the same effect as big dense blocks of text — your eyes just glaze over it," she says.
Augustine explains that bullets are only to be used to draw attention to the most important information. "If you bullet everything, everything is important, which means really nothing stands out," she says.

10. Time off
If you took time off to travel or raise a family, Gelbard doesn't recommend including that information on your résumé. "In some countries, it is acceptable to include this information, especially travel, but it is not appropriate to include that in the body of a résumé in the US."

11. Details that give away your age
If you don't want to be discriminated against for a position because of your age, it's time to remove your graduation date, says Catherine Jewell , author of " New Résumé, New Career. "
Another surprising way your résumé could give away your age: double spaces after a period.

12. References
If your employers want to speak to your references, they'll ask you. Also, it's better if you have a chance to tell your references ahead of time that a future employer might be calling.
If you write "references upon request" at the bottom of your résumé, you're merely wasting a valuable line, career coach Eli Amdur says.

13. Inconsistent formatting
The format of your résumé is just as important as its content, Augustine says.

She says the best format is the format that will make it easiest for the hiring manager to scan your résumé and still be able to pick out your key qualifications and career goals.
Once you pick a format, stick with it. If you write the day, month, and year for one date, then use that same format throughout the rest of the résumé.

14. Personal pronouns
Your résumé shouldn't include the words "I," "me," "she," or "my," says Tina Nicolai, executive career coach and founder of Resume Writers' Ink.
"Don't write your résumé in the third or first person. It's understood that everything on your résumé is about you and your experiences."

15. Present tense for a past job
Never describe past work experience using the present tense. Only your current job should be written in the present tense, Gelbard says.

16. A less-than-professional email address
If you still use an old email address, like BeerLover123@gmail.com or CuteChick4life@yahoo.com, it's time to pick a new one.
It only takes a minute or two, and it's free.

17. Any unnecessary, obvious words
Amdur says there is no reason to put the word "phone" in front of the actual number.
"It's pretty silly. They know it's your phone number." The same rule applies to email.

18. Your current business-contact info
Amdur writes at NorthJersey.com:
"This is not only dangerous; it's stupid. Do you really want employers calling you at work? How are you going to handle that? Oh, and by the way, your current employer can monitor your emails and phone calls. So if you're not in the mood to get fired, or potentially charged with theft of services (really), then leave the business info off."

19. Headers, footers, tables, images, charts
These fancy embeddings will have hiring managers thinking, "Could you not?"
While a well-formatted header and footer may look professional, and some cool tables, images, or charts may boost your credibility, they also confuse the applicant-tracking systems that companies use nowadays, Augustine tells Business Insider .
The system will react by scrambling up your résumé and spitting out a poorly formatted one that may no longer include your header or charts. Even if you were an ideal candidate for the position, now the hiring manager has no way to contact you for an interview.

20. Your boss' name
Don't include your boss' name on your résumé unless you're OK with your potential employer contacting him or her. Even then, Gelbard says the only reason your boss' name should be on your résumé is if the person is someone noteworthy, and if it would be really impressive.

21. Company-specific jargon
"Companies often have their own internal names for things like customized software, technologies, and processes that are only known within that organization and not by those who work outside of it," Gelbard says. "Be sure to exclude terms on your résumé that are known only to one specific organization."

22. Social-media URLs that are not related to the targeted position
Links to your opinionated blogs, Pinterest page, or Instagram account have no business taking up prime résumé real estate. "Candidates who tend to think their personal social media sites are valuable are putting themselves at risk of landing in the 'no' pile," Nicolai says.
"But you should list relevant URLs, such as your LinkedIn page or any others that are professional and directly related to the position you are trying to acquire," she says.

23. More than 15 years of experience
When you start including jobs from before 2000, you start to lose the hiring manager's interest.
Your most relevant experience should be from the past 15 years, so hiring managers only need to see that, Augustine says.
On the same note, never include dates on education and certifications that are older than 15 years.

24. Salary information
"Some people include past hourly rates for jobs they held in college," Nicolai says. This information is unnecessary and may send the wrong message.
Amy Hoover, president of Talent Zoo , says you also shouldn't address your desired salary in a résumé. "This document is intended to showcase your professional experience and skills. Salary comes later in the interview process."

25. Outdated fonts
"Don't use Times New Roman and serif fonts, as they're outdated and old-fashioned," Hoover says. "Use a standard, sans-serif font like Arial."
Also, be aware of the font size, she says. Your goal should be to make it look nice and sleek — but also easy to read.

26. Fancy fonts
Curly-tailed fonts are also a turn-off, according to O'Donnell. "People try to make their résumé look classier with a fancy font, but studies show they are harder to read and the recruiter absorbs less about you."

27. Annoying buzzwords
CareerBuilder asked 2,201 US hiring managers: "What résumé terms are the biggest turnoffs?" They cited words and phrases such as, "best of breed," "go-getter," "think outside the box," "synergy," and "people pleaser."
Terms employers do like to see on résumés include: "achieved," "managed," "resolved," and "launched" — but only if they're used in moderation.

28. Reasons you left a company or position
Candidates often think, "If I explain why I left the position on my résumé, maybe my chances will improve."
"Wrong," Nicolai says. "Listing why you left is irrelevant on your résumé. It's not the time or place to bring up transitions from one company to the next."
Use your interview to address this.

29. Your GPA
Once you're out of school, your grades aren't so relevant.
If you're a new college graduate and your GPA was a 3.8 or higher — it's OK to leave it. But, if you're more than three years out of school, or if your GPA was lower than a 3.8, ditch it.

30. A photo of yourself
This may become the norm at some point in the future, but it's just weird — and tacky and distracting — to include a photo with your résumé for now.

31. An explanation of why you want the job
That's what the cover letter and interviews are for!
Your résumé is not the place to start explaining why you'd be a great fit or why you want the job. Your skills and qualifications should be able to do that for you — and if they don't, then your résumé is either in bad shape, or this isn't the right job for you.

32. Opinions, not facts
Don't try to sell yourself by using all sorts of subjective words to describe yourself, O'Donnell says. "I'm an excellent communicator" or "highly organized and motivated" are opinions of yourself and not necessarily the truth. "Recruiters want facts only. They'll decide if you are those things after they meet you," she says.

33. Generic explanations of accomplishments
Don't just say you accomplished X, Y, or Z — show it by quantifying the facts.
For instance, instead of, "Grew revenues" try, "X project resulted in an Y% increase in revenues."

34. Short-term employment
Avoid including a job on your résumé if you only held the position for a short period of time, Gelbard says. You should especially avoid including jobs you were let go from or didn't like.
