12 Universities To Choose If From You Want To Study Computer Science in Nigeria

A senior lecturer at the University of Ibadan identifies 12 universities that bets offer Computer Science.

Computer Science students (Jigpoly)
If Computer Science is the course you choose to study in the university, then you've got to choose the university that best offers the program.
Recently, we informed admission seekers about institutions that best offer Law and Medicine in the country and many UTME candidates are taking advantage of the guide Pulse Student dishes out on the universities that best offer certain courses.

Unlike Law and Medicine, there is no professional body that rates the study of Computer Science in Nigerian Universities, but lecturers with years of experience in both field and lecture rooms can authoritatively recommend the best school to study this course for admission seekers.

Dr Roberts Charles, who is a Senior Lecturer of Computer Science at the University of Ibadan is one of such authorities.

The lecturer who has been teaching the course for 17 years at the premier University identified 12 universities that have proved to be very good at teaching the course.

In a chat with our blog, Dr Roberts said he drew his conclusions based on his interactions with the graduates of the schools who came for master's program at the University of Ibadan.

Here are the Universities he recommends for admission seekers who want to study computer Science.
University of Ibadan

Federal University of Technology, Akure

Federal University of Technology, Minna

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife

University of Calabar (UNICAL)

University of Benin, (UNIBEN)

Covenant University, Ota

Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU)

Kwara State University, (KWASU)

Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho

Ekiti State University (EKSU)

University of Lagos, Akoka

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The lecturer however blamed incompetent lecturers in the universities for the half baked computer science graduates in the country.

"Most Computer Science students in Nigerian Universities today are not practical oriented and it is because they don't have lecturers that are very competent and that is a problem. When the lecturer is not competent, the students too wont be confident in themselves.''

USURY – ON THE SIDE OF COMMON SENSE-RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

*USURY – ON THE SIDE OF COMMON SENSE*

(By Ojewale Ridwanullah Ayomide)

When people speak against interest, it often sounds more devotional than commonsensical perhaps because those who paint it as economically right have long been left to assume superiority in the argument. I however do not wish to overpass their brags of logic any further. A lecturer of economics in a reputable university reportedly silenced some of his students who stood against usury with the argument that it would amount to a high-degree insanity if one gives out a sum of money which he could well use to economically benefit himself unto someone else for business and allow the beneficiary go with all the profits. He contended that if the money had remained with the benefactor, he also could (or would) have gotten involved in businesses that'll bring profit anyway and that giving out the money means the beneficiary had denied the benefactor such opportunity, hence, the justification for usury. The argument may sounds deep, strong and tempting but then…it merely "sounds".

One thing we must necessitously clear at this point is the fact that lending is a favor and when you do a favor, you do not hold on to what you think it would've been like if you hadn't done it; at least a responsible man doesn't. Lending is never an obligation. If you have a plan for your money and it can't wait or it's more important than helping a man in need, then, do well in keeping it. Why feign compassion when greed is the true drive?

An apt basis for this argument is the fact that in a business, it's either a gain or loss; even when you get exactly what you've invested, there is still a loss of time and energy. Business is chosen to make it sound even less ridiculous as interest is demanded indiscriminately even when it's for a nonprofit yielding or dire purposes as hospital bills. The issue then is that, if a business can go on to bring profit, it certainly then, can bring loss. So, if the assumption on which the argument for usury is based is just profit and not loss inclusive, then it is grossly flawed. But if loss is also considered, the questions become; if interest should be paid because the beneficiary also must have gained and the gain should be shared, then shouldn't the loss be shared as well when he loses? If it makes sense that the lender has nothing to do with the losses, then it should make more sense that he has nothing to do with the profits.  The truth is that humans try to justify their greed even when it is obviously unjustifiable. If the lender had done the business himself, he well could have run into losses but when he lends out, he wants profit (via interest) regardless of whether the man makes it or not.

Going back to the argument of this "lecturer" who rather needs be lectured, he claimed that if the value of money is not what it was when he lent out, why should he get the same amount? But the answer is a forthright one. If the value had increased, would he have agreed to be paid in lesser amount (but equal value) of what he lent out? If the money had remained with him, that would not have stopped its depreciation and in such case, who would have requited him for the depreciation?

I am not against joint ownership; you may own a business and decide who runs it and how profit will be shared. However, when you lend out with a certain percent added pay back even when he has not been able to return just the principal, even when it has yielded nothing, even when you don't know if he'll be robbed of it the next minute, you can call it a business in a free world, you may say it's being smart but do not aver that you've done a favor (for everyone knows who is ultimately favored) and most importantly, do not try to justify it. Not all businesses are right anyway, but every reasonable citizen tries to rid his nation of the wrongs.

******
Usury is a form of modern slavery that has thrived long enough on the greed of men. It has wrecked nations, wracked potentials and even wreaked unspeakable havocs on lives and dreams. We cannot speak for growth and development until we speak against usury. Let's bring out the sense of love, compassion, responsibility and selflessness in our people. We can rid our society of it and we are surely better without it.

Five Reasons Why You Shouldn't Attend A Public University - Education

Incredibly Poor Quality of Education
Public Universities in Nigeria undeniably have the poorest quality of education. From too large classes with poor teaching aids to very poorly equipped laboratories to non existent academic support-Public Universities in Nigeria are the exact definition of HOW NOT TO RUN A UNIVERSITY.
In comparison private universities have smaller classes-which gives lecturers the ability to teach, impact and follow up Knowledge transfer. Also According to former NUC President, Peter Okebukola Covenant University has the highest per capita investment having spent 70 billion on 13,000 graduates as at 2013. According to NUC, about 40% of Equipment in ABUAD Mechatronics Dept are not present in any other public University. Also the President of Biotechnology Society of Nigeria also commented that Covenant university has the best Biology(Molecular Bio lab) in all of Nigeria.

Public Universities aid Criminality
Who doesn't know that Lautech is the Den of Internet Fraudsters? Public Universities generally aid all sorts of vices that are never found in Private Universities e.g Cultism, Cyber fraud, Sexual Assault etc. In contrast Private Universities are the true certifiers of "Character and Learning" - Students are monitored closely and there are huge consequences to erring which serves as deterrence to possible future offenders.
Also 99% of the Corrupt politicians in public service today graduated from public universities and started their criminality way from School. Have you heard of claims of OAU SUG looting association funds? Have you ever heard Covenant, Landmark and Abuad SUG loot anything even though they equally handle millions?

Poor Academic Support
Students of Public Schools are discouraged from succeeding in life - they are taught not to aspire for the best and if they do they are cut down. Many public universities take glory in depriving students of their deserved grades even though foreign universities like imperial college graduates about 41% of their graduating class as First class in their last convocation ceremony. This invariably affects the pysche of most graduates of public universities that they develop a sort of Stockholm syndrome where they actually appreciate the abuse and allow it foster where they eventually get to work. They end up believing that Stress is equal to Quality.Today most private universities have about 10% first class rate which is very encouraging.

Erratic and Poor Campus Conditions
From poor power supply, to poor residential arrangement to careless citing of Academic infrastructure. Public Universities are once again the way not to run a Universities. Many public universities house people on campuses like feral rats. Much of their residences are not fit for criminals in saner climes. Their libraries are usually deficit of good books and the ones available are usually torn.

Unstable Academic Calander
The only thing as unstable as public universities calendar is Nigeria's electricity supply. Public universities are erratic and complicated. If it is not ASUU it is NASU or NAAT or whatever. This is the complete opposite in private universities where staff development is prioritised and the lecturers can teach at their best rather than concentrating on teaching and imparting and not when next to have a show down with govt.

5 Reasons You Shouldn't Attend A Private University

If you look beyond the ASUU strikes in public universities, you'll see several benefits these schools have over their private counterparts.

In Nigeria, there is a general belief that private universities are far better than public varsities.
This belief is strengthened by the epileptic ASUU strikes and internal crises in public higher institutions across the country.
Usually, when a crisis does not get to the point of pausing the academic progression of the students and shutting the school gates, the crisis doesn't get resolved. These are parts of the reasons why some parents choose to send their wards to private universities. However, if you look beyond the ASUU strike in public universities, you will see several benefits these schools have over their private counterparts.

These benefits range from cheaper school fees to freedom to become an adult and exposure to the real world before becoming a graduate. The bulk of private university graduates don't have such exposure and experience.

So here are five reasons you should consider public university if you are seeking admission.

1. Cost of Education
The first thing people get to know about private universities is not the facilities they have but their school fees. Some private schools tuition fee is enough to build a house elsewhere. On the other hand, cost of education is very cheap.
Apart from this, cost of living in public university is also cheap as students are allowed to either patronise campus shops or those on the streets where prices are competitive. This is not allowed as some private universities will even punish students for having foodstuff in their hostel.

2. Freedom and Independence
Undergraduates in public universities enjoy some degrees of freedom as they are not kept under stringent rules on how to live on campus.
Private Universities have so many amusing rules that keep their students under the prying eyes of the management. No freedom, no independence, just students shuttling between lecture rooms and hostels. Private universities force their laws down the throat of their students as they have rules guiding everything. Private school is that entity that treats adults like kids by giving them rules on what to eat, how to dress and when to worship.

3. Campus Fun
Some Private universities are dry and are utterly devoid of campus fun. In public universities, you have parties to attend, meet real people, rich and poor; and even join socio-cultural associations like the Kegites groups.
Dating is also fun as students couple enjoy their relationship without being punished for expressing love. You can not do this in some private universities. In fact, some private universities frown at students of opposite sex hugging each other.

4. Public University encourages hard work
Some lecturers' nonchalant attitudes to work in public universities propel students to work hard to succeed.

For instance, a lecturer that comes to class only to give out handouts expects the students to impress him in their exams. Those lecturers who do not come to class regularly because of other commitments also expect good performance from the students. These students are denied a lot of things yet, they come out with good grades. On the other hands, private university students have almost everything to facilitate their education, yet, some of them are no match for public school graduates who are screwed to success.

5. Public university produces mature graduates
Everything public university undergraduates go through in the hands of their lecturers and the university system toughens and prepare them for the life after graduation. They understand life more on campus through the many challenges they go through. The same can not be said about private university undergraduates, most of whom only see life through one prism of their parents' wealth and lecturers' soft approaches to everything. They hardly make decisions for themselves. It is either their parents make it for them or the school management does.
