Yemi Osinbajo & The UNILAG Junior Typist: An Inspiring Story Told By The VP

This is a must read for all. If you are currently working hard and it seems like you are not getting the recognition and respect you deserve, keep pushing as you will read the rewards of your efforts soon!
While I was teaching at the University of Lagos, as a young lecturer, in the department of Public Law in the Faculty of Law, there were 3 typists in the department. The chief typist, senior typist, and the junior typist. Because in those days before laptops and personal computers, typists in universities had to do a lot of work and they were very important because you always needed to type all your materials.

When there was work to do, what l discovered was that the chief typist would disappear. He works only till 4 pm. The senior typist would be nowhere to be found. But a gentleman called Adereni the junior typist, who only had his school certificate, was remarkably hardworking. Sometimes I would drop him off at his home at 1am.

Years after I was working as an adviser to the then Attorney-General of the Federation Hon. Bola Ajibola, who later became a judge of the World Court. While in the court at The Hague, in the Netherlands, one day he called me and asked if I could recommend a good secretary who is hard working and could do long judgments. I had three options, chief typist, senior or this junior typist, but the junior typist at a time had only school certificate, he didn’t have any other qualification but l choose him. He got to the Hague, and typically worked hard and diligently.

Every judge in the court wanted him to work with them. He later moved his family over to the Hague and got degrees and made a good living for himself. One day he remembered me and actually sent me a car.

Argentina Vs Nigeria: Why We Lost Against Super Eagles – Coach Jorge Sampaoli

rgentina coach, Jorge Sampaoli has explained why his star studded side lost to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Tuesday’s grade one friendly in Russia.

The high profile friendly ended 2-4 in favour of Nigeria.

The former Sevilla coach watched his side throw away a two-goal lead to lose 2-4 as Nigeria rallied back with a strong showing in the second half.

Addressing reporters after the game, Sampaoli faulted his team’s wastefulness in front of goal in the first half.

He said, “I do not think it’s hard to explain. We played in the first half well, in the second we tried to play more in attack.

“It happens with all the teams. Nigeria had many good moments, but we defended well, and I think that we just did not realize our moments.
“There were many passes which we couldn’t use.”

Ozibo Ekele Graduates With First Class In History From University Of Ibadan

For the first time in 69 years, the University of Ibadan (UI) has produced its first graduate with a First Class honours degree in History.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Idowu Olayinka said Ozibo Ekele of the Department of History was one of the 186 students who made First Class at the 2015/2016 convocation ceremonies, which began yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Olayinka said 5,629 students graduated in various academic programmes from 12 faculties, including the Distance Learning Centre.

According to him, 186 passed with First Class honours, 1,538 finished with Second Class Upper, while 3,133 finished with Second Class Lower.

Also, he said 434 students made Third Class, while 81 others graduated with Pass degrees.

The vice chancellor urged the graduates to be good ambassadors of the university, saying they should impact positively on their world.

He noted that the students would have graduated a long time ago but for the strike embarked upon by the academic and non-academic workers’ unions.

According to him, the breakdown of the graduating list showed that 3.5 per cent and 28.6 per cent finished with First Class and Second Class (Upper) honours.

Prof Olayinka hailed Ekele for breaking the jinx as the department had never produced a first-class student since inception.

He said: “We warmly congratulate Ozibo Ekele, who is graduating today with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.6 out of a maximum of 7.0.”

Daniel Nkemelu Has 7.0 CGPA As Unibadan's Best Graduating Student -

ANIEL KENECHUKWU NKEMELU FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

The Best Graduating student (2015/2016) session Daniel Kenechukwu Nkemelu with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka flanked by the other Principal officer of the University at the 2017 Convocation Ceremony on Monday, 12 November, 2017. The Best Graduating Student returned with a perfect Cumulative grade Point Average of 7.0 out of a maximum of 7.0 and for this great achievement, Daniel is currently on a MasterCard Scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA for a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The breakdown of the graduating lists shows that 3.5 percent and 28 percent of the graduating students finished with First Class and Second Class (Upper) Honours respectively. The summary of First Degree Graduands reveals a total of 186 and 1,538 making First Class and Second Class Upper Division respectively, 3, 133 and 434, making Second Class Lower Division and Third Class respectively while 81 made Pass and 257 unclassified.

Olayinka said, “I am aware that there have been, of recent, strident public criticisms of the large number of First Class graduates from the universities. I hasten to add that we are exceedingly proud of all Ibadan graduates. We see this phenomenon from the strategic point of view of Input-Process-Output. In specific terms, the University of Ibadan has arguably the most competitive mechanism for undergraduate admission in the country. Only one out of 16 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, candidates who made the University of Ibadan their First choice can secure admission here. Our admission process is transparent and merit driven while our Faculty rank among the best in the country in terms of research productivity. Ibadan is for the best and brightest. This has been attested to consistently by the Times Higher Education World University rankings in which Ibadan is the only University in the country ranked among the topmost 801-1000 universities in the world. It may be worthwhile to mention in passing here that, as shown in table 2, in the United Kingdom, comparative figures from the higher Education Statistic Agency indicated an average of 23.6 percent of their students earning First Class and 49.6 percent obtaining Second Class Upper degree at the end of the 2015/2016 session”.

Continuing, “Among the main highlights of today’s event is that the University of Ibadan is producing the pioneering set of B.A. Music graduates, comparing 12 students one of whom earned a First Class Honours. It is gratifying to note that the Department of Music had earlier secured full accreditation from the National Universities Commission, NUC.

Olayinka disclosed that the Premier University has conformed with the new grading system from the NUC for undergraduate programmes starting with the institution’s current 100 level students pointing out, “The implications of this include 45 percent as the pass mark for all courses in the faculties operating the Course System, the abolition of Pass degree, and a transition from a 7-point grading systems to a 4-point grading system”.

Among the impressive feats boasted of by the Vice Chancellor include: two students, Amida Tella and Oluyemi Ajiboye graduating with First Class Honours at the recently released Final Bar qualification examination 2017 of the Nigeria Law School..

The Institution’s 69th anniversary programme continues till Friday November `17 2017 which is the Founder’s Day and the award of Doctoral degrees.

ASUP To Begin Indefinite Strike Monday - Education

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has vowed to embark on an indefinite strike with effect from Monday.

The decision was the outcome of the National Executive Council meeting of ASUP held on Saturday at the Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State, ChannelsTV reported.

The industrial action follows the failure of the Federal Government to implement all the agreements it entered with the union since 2016.

The union lamented that despite the long period given to the government to address some of the issues it raised, the government did not consider it necessary to address the demands for improved funding of polytechnic education in the country.

ASUP President, Usman Dutse, and Zone A Coordinator, Kabiru Yunusa, briefed journalists shortly after the emergency meeting which lasted for several hours.

Dutse, who noted that the union had given government sufficient time to implement all agreements, said they had no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum issued earlier.

According to him, some of the demands include non-implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report and shortfalls in personnel releases and withdrawal of allowances.
