188 students bag first class honors at Covenant University's 12th Convocation

A total of 188 students of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun, on Friday graduated with first-class degrees at the 2016/2017 convocation ceremony of the university.

Prof. Aaron Atayero, the Vice-Chancellor (VC), disclosed this during the 12th Convocation Ceremony and Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and presentation of prizes in Ota.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 1,426 students graduated this academic session.
They comprised 188 with first class honours degree, 568 with second class upper honours, 322 with second class lower, 47 with third class and 301 post graduate students.

Atayero said the university had trained a set of “expert thinkers and world changers” that had the ability to thrive in adversity and contribute their quotas to national development.
The VC also said that the institution was a foremost private university in Nigeria, setting the pace for other public and private institutions.
“Covenant University has continued to be at the cutting edge of innovation and research in proffering solutions to the nation’s challenges,’’ he said.

Dr David Oyedepo, the University Chancellor, said that the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Graduate Report ranked the products of the institution as the most employable graduates among all Nigerian universities.
Oyedepo said that most of the nation’s challenges needed indigenous solutions rather than foreign ones.
He said that the nation found itself where it was by choice, adding that it was time individual and leaders took the responsibility of solving the nation’s problems.
“Education would enhance such initiative in solving the nation’s challenges because it cannot give what we do not have in solving our problems,’’ he said.
Oyedepo urged the graduands to go forth well prepared to take responsibilities as they were going into a world of endless opportunities.
He also advised them to be purposeful contributors to the development of the nation.

Mrs Cecilia Akintomide, a former Vice-President and Secretary General in African Development Bank, in a keynote address, said that Nigeria could not continue to maintain the status quo in the education sector.
“The continued creation of private universities with inadequate funding for public universities will generate inequities that will haunt our future,’’ she said.
Akintomide said that resources available for public universities were limited in providing employable graduates.
She stressed the need for the Federal Government to grant scholarship to less privileged people so that they could achieve their dreams and contribute to the nation’s development.
She advised the Federal Government to improve funding of the educational sector by allocating more funds to it in the annual budgets.

Nnadi Nnedimkpa Susan graduates with 4.93 CGPA from Covenant University.

A Nigerian lady has today emerged the best graduating student in Engineering from Covenant University with first-class honors. Nnedimkpa Nnadi Susan graduated from the private University with a 4.93 GPA.
Her excited father, Uche Nnadi took to Facebook to share the news and wrote:

My baby, my queen, my one and only daughter..Nnadi Nnedimkpa Susan..graduates from the topmost private university in Nigeria, Covenant University, Otta, Ogun State, with a 1st Honours Degree in Electrical/ Electronics Engineering. She also came out the best graduating student in the school of engineering with a GPA of 4.93 out of 5; garnering so many awards along the way.
Susan is very much at home with the very top excellent performance both in character and learning. For instance, she was on top of her class throughout her rather short stint at Ruby Model School, Maiduguri, Borno State; she came out the best graduating student from Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Nursery and Primary School, Benin City, Edo garnering over 70% of all the awards available that year; At Louisville Girls Secondary School, she was the school Head Girl and came out the best graduating student, with the best result ever since the school was established making Nine straight A1 in each of the subjects she sat for & all Alpha in her IGSE exams. For that feat she won for herself the sum of One Million Naira (#1,000,000) plus numerous non cash awards. She was also the valedictorian for that year!
One can safely say that Nnadi Nnedimkpa Susan is a very special and unique child of God from birth. While other mothers are having a hard time weaning their children off breast suckling, Nnedi weaned herself from suckling at the tender age of 8 months, and also stopped herself from stooling in her diapers at a very, very tender age. It is on record that her mother and I have never had any cause to spank her for once all through her life. And not because she is a girl or because we have become "Americanized" parents who would rather spare the rod and spoil the child. No, not at all! She just never presented any cause for either of us to do so!
Nee, Nee My Daughter (as I fondly call her) your mom and I, your other siblings and, of course, the entire NNADI family with all our friends and well wishers have every cause to roll out the drums and celebrate you today and always. We wish you nothing but the very best in all your future endeavors as go forth into the world with a contributor, instead of a consumer, mentality in a bid to make the world a better place to live in for all humanity. You have done it before; you can do it again, and even much better. This, we pray, you will actualize in impeccable health, sound mind and excellent spirit! Do remain ever richly blessed and favoured! We are proud of you, Nee, Nee my daughter! Daddy.

Femi Falana urges Ajimobi and Aregbeshola to come to terms on LAUTECH issue

Mr. Femi Falana SAN has called on the Oyo and Osun state governments to ensure that the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is reopened without any further delay. The senior advocate made the call today at the memorial symposium held in honour of Professor Funmi Adewunmi at the Osun state university, Ikire campus. As a temporary measure Mr. Falana asked both state governments to set aside part of the London/Paris club loan refund to provide fund for the immediate reopening of the university. He said it was unacceptable that the university has been shut down for almost a year.

Since the Osun state government cannot afford to fund more than one state university the senior advocate suggested to the Osun state government to relinquish any claim to the ownership of Lautech and hand it over to the Oyo state government. Mr. Falana also urged the Oyo state government to be prepared to take over the ownership of Lautech and provide the needed fund for it. To do that successfully the senior advocate further urged the Oyo state government to abolish the new university of technology and transfer all its assets to Lautech which should be turned into a centre of academic excellence.

Mr. Falana disclosed that Professor Funmi Adewunmi was not promptly attended to by the management of the University College Hospital on June 13 when he was rushed there by his family after a brief illness. To prevent avoidable deaths in the country and equally stop the shameful practice of flying Nigerian leaders abroad for medical treatment Mr. Falana suggested that the bulk of the huge fund being recovered from looters should be earmarked to refurbish our ill equipped hospitals.

Mr. Falana asked the Attorney-general of Kogi state to enlighten Governor Bello of Kogi State  to appreciate that the fundamental right of Nigerian citizens to assemble and associate peacefully is constitutionally guaranteed and protected and that he lacks the legal  competence to proscribe a registered trade union like the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The human rights lawyer reminded the Kogi state governor that even when the late maximum dictator, General Sani Abacha purportedly  banned ASUU via  Decree no 4 of 1996 the Federal High Court upheld  his submission and  set aside the illegal ban. Mr. Falana therefore advised the ASUU leadership  to ignore the proscription so that Governor Bello can be made to realise the limit of his executive powers.

WAEC provides explanation for withheld results, says scripts can be remarked

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has provided steps candidates who are not satisfied with the outcome of their result can apply for in order for  their answer scripts to be remarked.

WAEC made this known while responding to questions on twitter.

According to WAEC, the process to get your script remarked is to first notify the school where you took the examination.

The school will then forward an application on your behalf to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

This application must be received 60 days after the release of the results and will attract a fee.

The council further gave clarification as to what "Outstanding Result" and With Held Results" means.

"Outstanding Result" simply means pending result. This means that there may be errors from the affected candidate either during registration or the examinations that are being corrected. The results that fall in this category have a high chance of being released.

"Withheld or held Results" on the other hand signifies that the affected candidate violated the rules & regulations guiding the conduct of the examination.

The fate of the results that fall in this category will be decided during the National Executive Council meeting that will be held in November this year. However, such results may or may not be released.

Just be good always (Article)

At a college of medicine in a Nigerian university, a doctor walks into a lecture theatre and greets the students, ". The students replied in unison, and
The doctor addresses the class,..“How's everyone? Today is my first day in your class and it is my good fortune to be with you this time. Before I introduce myself to you there's something I want to tell you. If there is anyone whose circumstances do not allow him or her to purchase my textbook, he or she should simply write me a note after class and send it to my office. He or she will be excused from buying the book.”
A student asked, “How come sir? All our teachers before you made it clear that those who don’t buy their textbooks will fail the year.”
He replied, “That does not apply to me. I am speaking only of my own textbook.”
A student laughingly remarks, “In that case sir, everyone is going to claim difficult circumstances and no one will buy the book.”
And the doctor replied, also with a laugh, “No problem. I will allow it. This being my first day with you, let me tell you a little story.”
And he began.....
------
"Many years ago, there was a roadside mechanic who died of a liver condition. His name was Mr Moses. He had a wife Mrs Victoria who was a petty Garri (casava flakes) seller in the open sun and rain of a core northern Nigerian market called Yankura, Sabon gari. It was a very poor family. One of their son's name was Oshiorenua.
_____
At the market one day, another poor garri seller asked: “How are you, mother of the doctor?”
Mrs Victoria: “We thank God oo, the weather looks bad. Seems like it’s going to rain heavily today.”

The hours passed, Oshiorenua came to the market. He told his mom, I need 8,500naira tomorrow, to buy books, a stethoscope, theatre gown and a white lab coat."
Mrs Victoria replied: “Must it be tomorrow?"
Oshio replied: “Yes Mummy, that’s what the professors told us.”
With no idea how she was going to get this large sum of money, she said: “Ok, you go home and study while I put in a bit of evening work.”
Oshio: “But the weather looks bad today, mummy. What are we going to do?"
She replied: “Its OK. God always provides for his own.”
Oshio left.
After a long day selling in the open market and making a meagre sales profit of 400 naira profit that day, she decided to go home. It was a bit late. There were no buses but many passengers. Not wanting to spend any part of her profit that day, she decided to begin the almost 10km long trek back home.
On her way home she came across an anxious, visibly shaken and well-dressed woman who was calling for help..."madam please help me"
Mrs Vicky turned and stopped...
The woman said: “Would you please stay by me and take me home? I will pay whatever you ask.” She continued “I have no money with me right now."
Mrs Vicky: “What payment are you talking about, ma? As long as God protects you, that is enough. I’m going to take you to your doorstep, and then I don’t need anything else. There is still good in this world, ma!”
The woman looked at Mrs Vicky in amazement.
The stranded stranger spoke with refined accent: "I was attacked by gangsters who robbed me of my car and my money and threw me out at the place you found me at."
Mrs Vicky: “Really? Then let’s go to the police station and file a case.”
The woman: “I just need to go home to take my drugs, I am hypertensive and also to check on my family. Then I will go to the police station.”
Mrs Vicky: “Never mind the stolen car or anything else. The important thing is that you are ok. Money comes and money goes.”
----------
As they were going along they came across an overloaded taxi and flagged it down. While in the overcrowded taxi, there were argument about the fare between the passengers and the adamant driver. It turned out that they were abandoned in the rain when the taxi in which they were travelling, at exorbitant rates, broke down. Now they cannot pay as much as they earlier bargained. Madam Vicky paid the extra 80 naira when they alighted. They were so thankful and prayed for her. All she jokingly asked them was, “Please it better you pray for my son, Dr Oshiorenua.”
They were now left alone in the taxi with with the other well dressed lady who asked her how how old her doctor son was. "He is ***years old.
The woman replied: "he looks a bit young to be a doctor.”
Mrs Vicky: “Actually, he is not yet a doctor. He is still a first year med student.”
The lady replied "Oh I see!"
---------
They reached the woman's house.
She said: “Please wait for me. I beg of you. I'll just change, take my medication and I want you with me in the police station. I know its late and I am asking for too much. Please."
Mrs Vicky thinking of her son, yet said: “No problem. I am waiting.”
The woman had barely entered the house when Mrs Vicky heard her screaming... One of the CO gas pipes had sprung a leak into the house. The woman’s househelp and two children were lying unconscious from inhaling the gas. They carried them with help of the taxi driver into the taxi cab and rushed off to the hospital. Once there, they were successfully resuscitated and stabilized.
The woman: “I owe you my life and the lives of my family. Just a few minutes would have been too late and they would have been…”
She put her hand in her expensive designer's handbag and offered Mrs Vicky a very large sum of money… which Mrs Vicky refused!

Mrs Vicky: “Madam, I will not accept one kobo. Even if you were not robbed, and this calamity had not befallen your family, I would still not take anything from you.”

The woman couldn’t understand: "But why?.... Ya Allah! What a good woman you are! Please, you must tell me your name and address. Even if you refuse to take any compensation, at the very least we are sisters now. Do please tell me your name.”
Mrs Vicky: “The honour is all mine.” And she told the rich woman her full names and the slum she lived in without traceable address.
The woman: "And your doctor son, what is his name? Oshiorenua, wasn’t it?"
Mrs Vicky: “Yes.”
The woman: “Now you know where I live, Mrs Vicky. You and your son must come and visit us. We are family.”
Mrs Vicky: "By God's grace, we will come  to see how your children are doing.”
The woman: “I will be waiting for you then we will go to know your home.”
--------------
It was late when Mrs Vicky got home and told her son of all the night’s happenings.

Oshiorenua: “Did you really manage to get only 400 of the 8,350 naira, mummy? Why did you refuse the payment from the woman? I might be thrown out of med school tomorrow!”
Mrs Victoria: "My son, listen to me. What brought you all the way to medical school and protected you all the way was the good  I do to hungry and weak strangers for God’s sake. I know for a fact that God will compensate me for it many times over one day. And then, the Holy Bible tells us: ‘Whoever hides the fault of others, God will hide his faults on the Day of Judgement. Whoever removes the worldly difficulty of his brother, God will remove his difficulty on the Day of Judgement. And God is at the service of anyone for as long as they are at the service of the weak and the needy." She continued, "Jesus Christ also said, whatever you do those in need, the neglected, the poor, you are doing it to me".

Oshiorenua, knowing that he was going to receive another long sermon if he persist, said "I just fear for tomorrow. I so much want to make you proud by becoming the best doctor I can"

Mrs Vicky: "It is all good, my child. Just go to college tomorrow with the 320 naira balance I have and leave the rest to God"
Grudgingly, Oshiorenua said: " I will.”
-----------
The next day when he was in class, a messenger entered his class and announced his name: “Would Oshiorenua please come to the Dean’s office?”

He stood up in consternation and trepidation: “Me?”
The messenger: “Please come with me. The Dean wants to see you.”

With all sorts of fears and thoughts of what may possibly be wrong rushing through his mind, Oshiorenua went up to the Dean’s office. Thinking...why did the Dean want to see me? Did I do something wrong? My papers? With a heart that was beating almost audibly against his ribs, he entered the Dean’s office.

The Dean: “Are you James Oshiorenua King?”
Oshiorenua, unsure of himself: “Yes, sir.”
The Dean smiled broadly: “And your mother sells garri in Sabon-gari market?”
Astonished, Oshiorenua said: “Yes…but how do you know that, ma? Has something happened to my mother?”
The Dean: “No, nothing of that sort. But something bad would certainly have happened to my two children and househelp, had I not met your wonderful mother last night after my car was stolen.”
Oshiorenua: “Then Prof you must be the woman my mother told me about last night?”
The Dean smiled: “Yes, that was me. So now you see. I will be waiting for you and your mother to visit us today.”
Oshiorenua, extremely excited: “Oh, we will come by God's grace, we will certainly come, Ma'am!”

The Dean offered Oshiorenua profuse thanks. He then asked her permission to rejoin his class.
As he was leaving, the Dean called him back.
“These are your textbooks, your lab coat, pen touch, sphygmanometer, patella hammer, theatre gown and your stethoscope. Please accept them.”

The student modestly tried to refuse these gifts, but the Dean insisted and simply wouldn’t take no for an answer. So he accepted.
_______________________________

With the story at the end, the teacher/doctor addressed his students.
"Now it is time to introduce myself. I am James Oshiorenua King, ....the son of the garri seller and very poor roadside mechanic.
...
The male students stood up in standing ovation while most of the female students began to cry.
____________
Again, I hope my story encourages you to unleash the good in you?
Now I prophecy goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and we shall dwell in the house of God forever. Never Complain anymore Just show mercy!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Senate President appeals to LAUTECH students, promises to find everlasting solution

The Senate President of Nigeria, Abubakar Bukola Saraki who has been actively involved in the crisis going on at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) held a meeting yesterday with the union of the school and various comrades in the school. He said,
"The Senate is touched by the ongoing 2-year
strike at Ladoke Akintola University of
Technology (LAUTECH)". This is why today
myself, the leader of the Senate and a few other
distinguished Senators met with students and
alumni of the institution.
I remember it was in November last year that
this matter first came up at the Senate. Since
then, we have watched and reviewed the
situation, which culminated in the passage of the
motion last week where we resolved to call on
the Oyo and Osun State governments to sort out
the ownership issue, and the Federal
Government to work towards the release of
necessary funds for the reopening of the school.
Let me make myself clear on behalf of the
Senate: Now that we have taken up this issue,
we are not going to stop until action is taken.
In the past week, I have had the opportunity to
speak to the Minister of Education on the
LAUTECH closure, and he has reassured me that
a meeting is in the works to bring
representatives of both governments together to
resolve the ownership affair between the two
states.
Additionally, we can argue from now until
tomorrow about the ownership of the University,
however, all parties concerned must know that
the LAUTECH students and their parents are the
ones that are affected by this. Hence, swift
action must be taken.
Moving forward, we will continue to fight for the
students of LAUTECH so that soon, the doors of
that university will be open.
At this point, I want to continue to appeal to
LAUTECH students for their patience. There is
light at the end of the tunnel. We are on your
side. Please take this message back to your
families: “The Senate is on your side. We will
continue to fight for you.”

Alvaro Morata in London: Striker reveals why he is joining Chelsea

Chelsea announced yesterday they had agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the services of Morata, which is understood to be around £70million.

This morning he touched down at Heathrow ahead of his medical and was quizzed by Sky Sports reporter Paul Gilmour over the impending move.
When asked why he's signing for Chelsea, Morata said: "Because it's the best club.
"Antonio Conte is one of the best coaches in the world and I'm so happy to work with Antonio."

Morata was wanted by Manchester United earlier this summer but a deal failed to materialise, with the Red Devils signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton instead.

Morata refused to comment on the collapsed deal and is just excited to get started at Chelsea.
When asked why a move to United broke down, he said: "I don't know. The most important thing is I am here, I'm playing for Chelsea. Finally I'm here."

Morata revealed he had spoken to Chelsea defender and Spain team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta before agreeing to the move.
"I spoke with Azpilicueta. He told me everything was OK here," Morata said.
The Blues have been in the market for a striker for the entirety of the transfer window and missed out on Lukaku.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is in need of a new frontman after telling last season's top scorer Diego Costa he can leave the club.
Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Torino's Andrea Belotti and Manchester City's Sergio Aguero have all been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

But Morata is the chosen one and looks set to complete his switch to west London in the coming days.

LAUTECH crisis: We won't pay until audit is completed – Oyo State Governor Ajimobi

Oyo state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has stated that no money will be released to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) until the completion of a proper audit of the institution’s finances.

The governor stated this on Wednesday in a brief meeting with management staff and students of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education at the State Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan.

He appealed to the management and staff of LAUTECH to cooperate with consultants engaged to carry out the audit.

He said: “We appeal to the management and academic staff of LAUTECH to allow the consultants engaged to properly audit the institution’s account.

“We will not pay any money again until the books are properly audited. It is not by force, propaganda, mischief and innuendoes that they will get result but by positive engagement.

“There is nothing wrong in auditing the school, it is simply checking on what we have done so far, particularly the amount we have committed into the school. Why are they afraid of audit?

“We appeal to them to let the auditors do their job. And if the audit report requires us to pay more money, we will pay but the ones they have collected so far, they must also account for it.”

The governor also directed the immediate reopening of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo which was shut on June 2 after violent students’ protest over welfare and teaching facilities.

Governor Ajimobi at the Wednesday meeting, acknowledged the receipt of an apology letter tendered by the management on behalf of the students. He appealed to the students to shun violence and brigandage and employ dialogue.

His words: “Our problem in this country is that we have lost our value system. Our value system has broken down but some of us would do everything possible to uphold what should be.

“Now that they have apologized, in the spirit of soberness, the Oyo state government has decided to admonish them on their engagement attitude. It is not by going on rampage and brigandage,

“It is through engagement, I can see their soberness, realization and remorse and on that basis, we agree that the school be re-opened immediately”

Responding, the Provost of the College, Dr Razak Adefabi, thanked the governor for the kind gesture noting that the school had put in place measures to forestall future occurrence.

He said the institution was working hard to improve its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to help cope with financial needs.
