UI May Withdraw 580 100 Level Students For Poor Academic Performance

The management of University of Ibadan (UI) has announced plans to withdraw 580 100 level students from the institution.

The University` Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Olayinka, said this while lamenting over poor performance of the students.

Olayinka said 580 of the 2,961 students admitted into the University last year performed woefully in their first semester examination.

The Vice Chancellor said the affected students were those admitted when banned was placed on Post-UTME examination by the Nigerian Government las year.

He said the University could not assess the students; hence they were admitted into the university base on their JAMB score and O` Level results.

“The Senate of the University of Ibadan at its meeting held on Wednesday, 18 October, 2017, considered the results of the First Semester Examinations for the 2016/2017 Session. One major feature of the results was the noticeably poor performance of the 100 level students.

“From our records, 510 of the students out of the 2,961 posted a Cumulative Grade Point Average of less than 1.0. Kindly note that this is the minimum level of performance required to retain studentship here. In other words, 17.2 percent of the 100 level students would have to significantly improve their academic performance in order not to be advised to withdraw from the University at the end of the session,” Olayinka said in a statement.

The Vice Chancellor gave a breakdown of percentage of students with CGPA less than 1.0 in various departments as:

    Faculty of Arts- 6.9%
    Science-16%
    Basic Medical Sciences-34.8%
    Clinical Sciences-5.5%
    Dentistry-7.1%
    Public Health-45.8%
    Forestry-33.3%
    Social Sciences-8.3%
    Education-15.4%
    Veterinary Medicine-26.6%
    Technology-20.9%
    Law-2.4%, and
    Pharmacy-12.9%.

Olayinka said, “As leaders of this University at this point in time, we have the onerous responsibility of bringing the best out of our students.

“For me as a person, it hurts very deeply when any student is advised to withdraw from the university on account of very poor academic performance. As you are aware, the pass mark in any of your courses is now 45 percent as against 40 percent hitherto. Secondly, Continuous Assessment now accounts for 40 marks out of the maximum 100 marks in each course.

“Moreover, the minimum number of units that you need to pass at the end of the 100 level is now 24 units, as against 20 units previously. All these taken together indicate that the standard is being improved. Students are expected to rise to the occasion by being more focused and always remember the primary reason why you are here.

“One of the measures being put in place, by Senate, is to strengthen our Continuous Assessment Policy. In this respect, there will be at least two tests or assignments conducted during this Semester. The three domains of cognitive, affective and psychomotor are to be taken into consideration in the determination of continuous assessment scores.

“The marks allotted to continuous assessment will be spread to reflect the totality of what students do and could include one or a combination of quizzes, conduct in and out of class, theatre, laboratory, class participation, group work, practical/field work, assignments, class attendance, presentations and tests. Moreover, a week has been set aside in the revised Academic Calendar for Continuous Assessment. This is the period from Monday, 6 November 2017 to Friday, 10 November, 2017.

“I hasten to add that the Senate has directed Heads of Departments to implement the strengthened Continuous Assessment Policy in the University. Deans of Faculties will monitor the level of compliance while the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will coordinate,” he said.

As you are aware, parts of the second stanza on the University Anthem talks of 'Greatness won with honest toil'. Here it is only honest. hardwork that pays.

I implore you to work harder this Semester. I wish you all the best in the remaining few weeks before you start the end of Semes

Episode 2) A House Of Commotion… The Favourite Wife’s Lot!

(Episode 2) A House Of Commotion… The Favourite Wife’s Lot!

As soon as they got to Kaduna, Fatimah insisted on going to her parents’ house without further delay. She wanted to tell them about her decision to marry Alhaji Abdul and the earlier she got down with that, the better for her.

Alhaji Abdul: “you want to go to Zaria right away? I thought you would like to come to my house for the first time and see my wives who would soon be your co-wives” he said to her in the car.
Fatimah: “I will do that some other time after I have gotten my parents approval”
Alhaji Abdul: “okay then. I will drive you home myself. Let me call my driver to bring my car” he said for they were in the taxi they had boarded.
Fatimah: “don’t worry. We just came back and I am sure you are very tired. I will pick a commercial bus to Zaria” she lied to him. The reason why she was against him going to drop her at home was because she was afraid of her father’s reaction when he meets him.
Alhaji Abdul: “no. My wife to be cannot be seen hopping from one commercial vehicle to the other. If you insist that I go home and rest, then we will get a cab that will take only you to Zaria. She agreed and they got a cab as drop that drove her to Zaria.
    ====
Mustapha was alhaji Alhaji Abdul’s first and only child. He looked very much like his father in all things and his father was well pleased with him. At 33, he lived in his father’s mansion with his wife and two children. His father had insisted on them living in the same compound since the compound had three detached apartments. The one he had given to Mustapha after he helped him marry the daughter of his best friend was a 2 bedroom well furnished bungalow. Alhaji Alhaji Abdul with his three wives lived in the main apartment that had four rooms upstairs and 3 rooms downstairs each with its toilet and bathroom and two parlours. All the rooms in the compound including Mustapha’s and the boy’s quarters where the domestic staff lived were all well furnished and decorated. They never went out of electricity as Alhaji Abdul could not stand darkness. He had solar power plant and a standby generator in his house just in case PHCN seized electricity which they rarely do since his house was located in the GRA area of Ungwan Rimi, a place where the cream de la cream of politicians and business tycoon in Kaduna owned their houses.
Mustapha had protested against living in the same compound with his father after marriage but his father had assured him that it was for the good of the family so that they would be united. Mustapha knew that unity was far away from his family because the other wives hated his mother who was the mother of Alhaji Abdul’s only child and the uwar gida (first wife).
Mustapha was therefore shocked when his father summoned him to his bedroom after he returned from Dubai and told him of his intention to take another wife.
Mustapha listened with apt attention to all that his father said without interrupting him for he could not bring himself to interrupt his father.
Mustapha: “but father, I cannot believe that you are thinking of marrying another wife” he said after his father had finished talking.
Alhaji Abdul: “and why don’t you believe it? Is it that I cannot afford another wife or what?”
Mustapha: “it is not about the money, alhaji. I am not sure there is anything that you cannot afford in this world, so long as money is involved”
Alhaji Abdul: “then what are you talking about, young man” he asked getting irritated.
Mustapha: “it is about the entire stress involved in getting a new wife and the endless commotions going on among your wives in this house. Do you want to add charcoal to a fire that is already burning?”
Alhaji Abdul: “which stress? Did I tell you that I am not longer man enough or what? Look, about the quarrels, don’t bother yourself about that. Women will always be women and they must always quarrel. I am sure doing that gives them joy”
“but father” Mustapha started to say before his father interrupted him.
Alhaji Abdul: “kai yaro, I did not tell you this because I wanted to seek your permission. I told you because our culture demands that I tell you things like this as my first child. For your information, the girl in question has already accepted my proposal, so it is a signed deal”
Mustapha: “okay father. Who is the girl?” he asked in feigned resignation.
Alhaji Abdul: “now you are talking. She is from this state, she just finished her NYSC, don’t worry, she is very young and would respect your mother and step mothers. She is just 23 years old”
Mustapha: “What! 23 years old? Haba mana father. That is not right. How can you, an old man marry a 23 years old girl? Even my wife is older than that for crying out loud” he observed.
Alhaji Abdul: “I have told you my own and that is final. Have a good day, young man” he said and dismissed his bewildered son.
Mustapha left his room and went into his mother’s court. Her female maids were giving her a pedicure when he entered. As soon as she saw the looks in his eyes, she dismissed them.
Hajiya: “what is it son? You don’t look too good. Are you having issues with your wife again?” she asked going up to meet him.
Mustapha: “Do you know that your husband is planning to take another wife?” he asked ignoring her chain of question.
Hajiya: “is it your father that you are referring to as my husband?”She asked ignoring his question too.
Mustapha: “mother, please answer my question. This is no time for frivolities”
His mother sighed and went back to her seat.
“he told me as soon as he returned from Dubai that I should get ready to welcome another wife in a few months time” she said sadly.
Mustapha: “and what did you tell him?”
Hajiya: “nothing. I just accepted. Women do not have a choice about our husbands marrying other wives, do we” she asked rhetorically.
Mustapha: “I cannot believe this mother. You mean you did not tell him it is wrong to marry a girl who is several years my younger sister? Why didn’t you tell him that you were having enough troubles with other wives already and that he shouldn’t add to your stress?”
Hajiya: “your father is the man of the house and it is not in my place to challenge his decision”
Mustapha: “don’t tell me that, mother. At the end of the day, you will be the one to bear all the brunt of the pain as the first wife. What does he need another woman for at this age? Does he want to die on top of a woman?”
Hajiya: “be careful how you talk about your father son. You must respect him in all things, no matter what”
Mustapha: that marriage cannot hold. I will do all that is within my power to stop it” he said and stormed out with his mother calling out to him.
Hajiya: “don’t harm the poor girl in anyway, it is your father that asked her to marry him and not the other way round. Allow them get married” she said after his retreating figure.
Mustapha could not afford to watch his mother go through the heartbreak she always went through anytime his father took another wife. He had watched twice as her heart shredded to pieces when his father married his other wives. To make it worse, she had to cover up her pain and welcome her co-women with all smiles and kindness. Most times she went out of her way to make them comfortable and they turned around to bite her accusing her of being the reason behind their inability to conceive.
He was going to do something to stop that marriage for the sake of his mother’s good heart and that was final.

Question: Do you approve of Mustapha’s resolve to stop the marriage? Is his mother as good as she appears?

    Watch out for episode 3

51 years old Alhaji Abdul brought out a box containing an engagement ring and flashed it before his 23 years old lover, who was ten years younger than his eldest son, begotten by the first of all his 3 wives.

Alhaji Abdul: “Fatimah, will you marry me? Will you spend the rest of your beautiful life with me in my paradise?” he asked sitting comfortably on the chair in the posh restaurant that they had visited in Armani hotel, located in the heart of Dubai.
Fatimah couldn’t believe her eyes. The rich and famous Alhaji Abdul asking her to marry him? No, that was too much for her young heart to contain.
Alhaji Abdul: “I am waiting for your reply, sarauniyyar mata (Queen of all women)” he said flashing her his sparkling white teeth.
Fatimah: “are you serious about this, alhaji” she asked afraid that he may be pulling a stunt on her.
Alhaji Abdul: “I have told you several times not to call me alhaji. Leave that for my domestic staff and outsiders. You are my girl and there is no need for protocol”
Fatimah: “I am sorry, I keep forgetting”
Alhaji Abdul: “It is okay, pretty one. So, is it a yes to my proposal?” as he said that, he opened the red box wrapped in pink ribbons. He brought out the ring and Fatimah’s eyes popped out when she beheld the most beautiful engagement ring she had seen in reality and movies. He removed the ring and stretched it forth to her. She obliged and gave him her finger.
Fatimah: “yes, I will marry you, alhaji” she said excitedly. He wore the ring on her finger and kissed it, she shrieked at the feeling of his beard on her finger but then she didn’t mind. Alhaji was rich and influential and that was all that mattered. Age afterall was just a number.
Alhaji: “now that we are done with this, the next step is to tell your people about us and then tell me when I will come to see them. I want the marriage ceremony to be done not later than 3 months time. Is that okay my dear?”
Fatimah: “yes, I will talk to my parents as soon as we get back to Nigeria” she grinned at the prospect of her getting married into such a rich and enviable family.
Fatimah: “but alhaji, sorry Abdul. How about your other wives? Will they welcome me as their co wives?” she asked suddenly afraid.
Alhaji Abdul: “of course they will. I have told you that my wives are very friendly. As a matter of fact, the holy book permits any man who has the will and capacity to marry up to four wives. I am only following that order”
Fatimah: “I understand but then the book says a man should only marry four wives if he can love and carter for them equally” she added.
Alhaji Abdul: “that is what I intend to do. Money is not my problem and you know that. Find out from all my 3 wives if I have ever denied them anything that they have ever wanted. They are living better than other women whose husband’s have only one wife so relax”
Fatimah: “okay, my mind is at rest now” she heaved a sigh of relief.
“my friends will die of envy” , she thought and smiled to herself.
After their dinner, they walked to their room, holding hands like young people who had fallen in love for the first time. As they walked, Fatimah’s mind drove her back to how she had meet alhaji Alhaji Abdul and how their relationship started two months ago.
It was on a Tuesday morning after their passing out parade from NYSC, she and other friends whose parents could not afford to pick them with their cars as the parents of other ex corp members were doing left the stadium were the parade had taken place and were trekking to Kano road where she would take a bus to her lodge before travelling to see her parents the next day. When they got to Kano road, there were lots of passengers waiting to board the buses that were not coming. Soon the weather changed and it was obvious that there was going to be a heavy downpour. A bus painted in yellow and green, typical of all commercial buses in Kaduna pulled over and before Fatimah could enter, her friends and other passengers had gone in, the bus was filled beyond capacity and there was no way she could perch in it, not even on the engine. The buss zoomed off, leaving her frustrated.
Soon it began to drizzle and people began to run helter skelter. She stood under the rain, her discharge certificate in hand, not knowing where to go. It was this time that Alhaji Abdul pulled behind her with his clean ash coloured Lexus jeep.
Alhaji Abdul: “hop in, before the rain begins to fall heavily” he said but she ignored him and attempted to walk away but he called out to her.
Alhaji Abdul: “are you okay at all? Can’t you see that I am old enough to be your father and just want to help you? Look, I am not one of those men who go about picking little girls on the street. I am a married man and I just had pity on you because I can imagine the havoc that this rain will do to your discharge certificate. I was once a corps member just like you and so I know what I am talking about” without a word she entered the car and they drove off. He took her to her house and drove away after giving her his complimentary card in case she needed any help about securing a job.
That night, she couldn’t sleep as the image of his handsome face and his exiotic car, phones and wrist watch kept on flashing through her head. She knew that he was way older than her but infatuation didn’t care about all that, she already had a crush on him.
The next day she called him and that was how their friendship which later graduated to relationship started.
Alhaji Abdul was unlike other men although he was strikingly rich. Many times he would take her out to restaurants and boutique for shopping and at the end of it all, he would take her back to Zaria to her parents house although he never entered the compound, where she relocated to after her service year without even mentioning sex or any form of intimacy.
She had thought that with time he would reveal his true colour and ask for sex but that didn’t happen. He kept spending on her, buying her designer things that she never thought she would buy in her life. To crown it all, he placed her on a monthly salary after their first month of dating and he also promised to get her a job as soon as the budget for that year was passed, that was the time government ministries would start recruiting.
Their relationship was pure and simple, they were in love with each other but sex was not involved. They were contended with each other’s company. It was as a result of the trust she had for him that she agreed to follow him to Dubai when he told her he was going for a two days seminar and invited her to join him. At first, she had declined, afraid of what he may do to her there and considering the fact that she had never travelled out of the country but he had assured her that he meant no harm and she had followed after lying to her parents that she was travelling for a job interview in another town with him helping her secure all the necessary travel documents. She didn’t know that he had planned to come and propose to her.
Alhaji Abdul: “are you okay? You appear so far away” he said touching her slightly and bringing her back from her trip to memory lane. ‘
Fatimah: “yes, I am fine. I was only thinking of how we met, you know. This whole thing is too good to be true” she opened up to him.
Alhaji Abdul: “you are right. The truth is that I never set out to fall in love with you. In fact, I never knew that I would get married to another woman again, but then who can predict love? Love takes you to a place you do not want to go and then brings you back when you don’t want to leave there” he said philosophically.
    Fatimah: “you are correct”
That night, Fatimah could barely sleep as she thought that alhaji would attempt to make love to her since they were already engaged. To her surprise, he slept without evening extending his hand to hold her.
Their return flight to Nigeria was scheduled for 9:30am the next morning. Fatimah’s heart began to pound furiously when she thought of her parents reaction when she informs them that she was engaged to a man who had 3 wives already and who was older than her own father even though they had never met him. She knew it would not go down well with her disciplinarian and strict father. Trouble times were surely ahead for her, that she knew only too well.

Question: Is this one love abi what? Is there anything wrong with Fatimah marrying a man older than her father? Will the other wives accept her as Alhaji Abdul has assured her?
