Things you need to know about or before applying for government scholarships (Part 1)…..

There are various government scholarships you might not know. Government scholarships in Nigeria are classified into two:
(1)    Local government scholarship and;
(2)    International government scholarship.
(1) Local government scholarship: It is controlled by Federal government scholarship board located in Abuja. This board offer Nigerian undergraduates scholarship and has a yearly worth of about #100,000 -#150,000, this kind of award is known as “Nigerian Award” since it directly from the Federal government. The board also organizes a yearly examination which students with good result apply to. This board also sees to given foreign government scholarship by it bilateral agreement with some countries likes Turkey, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, and Algeria.

(2) International government scholarship: This scholarship is offered by International governments. This is done in various ways through the embassy located in the country’s capital and through the scholarship board located in that country. Note that both are used to select students in Nigeria. Some countries like Japan, Turkey, etc. select students mainly through the embassy because their examination is coordinated mainly by them, unlike countries like Russia, Serbia, etc. which receive students only from the scholarship board in the country. Also note that the traveling process will later be coordinated by the embassy of the awarded country.
Things that increase your approval in foreign government scholarship (Undergraduate award)
·         Certificate of various language exams like test of oral English (TOEFL), sat and others.
·         Admission into desired country’s university, although this is not an important factor.
·         Distinctions in West African Examination Council (A’s is needed in a keenly contested examination like this. Note, WASSCE is recognized anywhere in the world unlike “NECO” which is usually accepted by some African countries.
·         Choice of course:  “Medicine” is usually chosen by most applicants while only a few choose some other courses.
·         Age is an important factor as student less than 18 are usually not considered.
·         Scholarship is given to students from poor background and not students from rich background on normal conditions.
     Things that increase your approval in foreign government scholarship (Postgraduate award)
·         Certificate of various languages exams like test of oral English (TOEFL), SAT and others.
·         Graduation with first class result is indeed a boost.
·         Lucrative areas of specialization.
·         Project worked on during the previous degree.
·         Student who study medicine with “MBBS” degree and wanting to undergo a residency program are usually not accepted because of the number of years and qualifying exam that must be written.
·          Age is an important factor as student less than 27 is usually considered and those above 35 usually are not given consideration.
·         Scholarship is given to students from poor background and not from rich background on normal conditions.
·         Note: Postgraduate students are usually given spaces in foreign government scholarships because they have low time to complete their program which is usually a year or at most two years compared to undergraduate student with a minimum year of 4years.
Can I apply for foreign government scholarship without test of oral English (TOEFL)?
Some countries allow you to apply for their scholarship without this but you will be recommended to write the exam before starting your program in this language in the chosen country. Turkey as an example allows this.
Can I apply for a government scholarship without international passport?
It is recommended you have this before starting your application because it will be needed in during the process of application.
Can I undergo my program in the chosen country’s language?
Yes, you can.
If yes, how will I learn the language?
You will be required to undergo a six months or more program to learn the language before starting the degree program.
Can I apply for a change of course after starting my program under government scholarship?
Some government scholarships do not support this.  Government like Japan does not support this, but government like Turkey supports change of program if the student has an excellent CGPA.
